General maintenance tips
Cleaning
One of the most essential steps to looking after your device is keeping it clean. Dust and dirt can start to build up on both the outside and inside of your console - here’s how to clean it. Using a soft dry cloth (microfibre if possible), wipe down the outside of the device. You can also use compressed air to clean out your air vents, or a soft brush if compressed air isn’t available.
Updates
Keeping your console up to date is vital - without regular software updates from the manufacturer, issues and errors can arise. Make sure you check for updates and install them when they’re available; this includes updates for games as well as your console itself.
Accessories
Using unofficial accessories can cause issues with your console or affect its performance. It’s important to use the accessories that are designed for your specific console, and avoid third-party products.
Heat and moisture
Excessive heat and moisture can damage your console's internal components, so make sure you keep it in a cool, dry place. Avoid placing it near windows or in direct sunlight, and don't use it in humid environments like bathrooms or kitchens.
Refresh rates and monitor compatibility
Gaming consoles, especially the latest generation, support a wide range of refresh rates, so ensuring that your console and monitor are compatible will optimise your gaming experience. First, you should check the specifications of your console to see what refresh rates it supports. Next, check your monitor to ensure it can match or exceed the refresh rate that your console can support - this will avoid screen tearing.
Should I use third-party accessories?
Third-party accessories can be a handy and often less expensive option for your console, however there are some important considerations to take when considering whether to get one. First, check that the device is compatible with your specific console. Next, check to make sure that the device adheres to industry safety standards. Finally, be cautious when using devices that might modify the console itself, as these may void your warranty and cause damage if they’re not installed safely and correctly.
What can parental controls do?
There are plenty of options you’ll be able to change. These include restrictions on game content based on age ratings, limiting communication when online, and time limits for usage. There may also be options to restrict access to certain features on the console that you can lock behind a PIN or password. All of these features are designed to give you better peace of mind when letting your child use a gaming console.
What online features does my console have?
One of the biggest internet features that consoles have today is online gaming. This lets you interact and play with other gamers from across the world. Consoles usually require a subscription service to access this feature, such as Xbox Live or Playstation Plus, so check this before you try to access any online features.
Another big advantage the internet has given consoles is access to downloadable content, or DLC. This comes in many forms; DLC is commonly used to describe additive content that you can purchase to add features to an already complete game, but if your console has access to the internet you can often download entire games online. Being internet-enabled also allows for you to keep games updated, as developers nowadays will often release updates to fix bugs or release new content to their games, something you can only get if your console is online.
Modern consoles also have access to many of the conveniences of computers and TVs - this includes streaming apps such as Netflix or Disney+, and chat apps that let you keep in contact with your friends.
Lastly, the latest generation of consoles have access to the cloud. This can be useful for multiple reasons - first, cloud storage lets your console keep and access game data and saves without needing loads of storage on your device. This makes keeping your games library as large as possible! Cloud gaming is also an emerging feature, where you can play games on remote servers rather than using your own device. By streaming the game over the internet, you can play any game anywhere.
